Interview: Mark Yarm “Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge”

A few years ago on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of Sub Pop, Mark Yarm wrote an amazing oral history piece for Blender magazine, where he was then a senior editor.  After the magazine folded, Yarm still had a wealth of information left and thought it might be turned into a really cool book.  But Yarm didn’t just write a really cool book, he put together what turns out to be the definitive oral history of Grunge.  “Everybody Loves Our Town” is the “Please Kill Me” for a new generation of music fans.

Yarn conducted over 250 unique interviews with most-likely everyone who was there, including musicians, reporters, producers, scenesters and hangers-on.  And, the book has many first-time revelations from Courtney Love, Mudhoney frontman Mark Arm, and the late Mike Starr from Alice in Chains. (Yarm was one of the last people to speak with Starr before he died in March)

Everybody Loves Our Town” also includes rare, never-before-seen photographs of Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Pearl Jam and others.

In this interview, Yarm talks about how the book came together, the infamous Cat Butt/L7 tour that included everything from sex to hatchets, how everyone loathes the label “Grunge” and who the person you would least expect to see connected with the Seattle scene actually is.

Buy Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge. Find the book and Mark on Tumblr, Facebook and Twitter.  See Mark speak on a panel this Sunday the 18th at 2pm at The Brooklyn Book Festival.  It’s free!
